Discover The Top Rated Pet Hair Vacuums 2017
Last Updated: 27th August 2017
Your search for the best vacuum for pet hair removal is over.
I’ll cut right to the chase so you don’t need to read any further.
It’s the Shark Rotator Powered Lift-Away TruePet NV752 and I’ve found it at the cheapest price online with free shipping.
If you’re like me, you consider your pets full-fledged members of your family.
As a pet lover, my dog has the freedom of the house.
But just like other members of my family he drives me crazy from time to time with his constant shedding of hair and dander.
After years of tolerating pet hair from Buddy, my 8 year old Lab, I decided to do some research and invest in the best quality vacuum cleaner designed specifically with pet owners in mind.
Being a self-confessed vacuum cleaner expert, it didn’t take me long to narrow down the best pet hair vacuum.
After a week of nightly research reading reviews and learning way more than I care to admit about pet vacuum cleaners, I narrowed my choices down to a small number of cordless, upright, canister and handheld models.
No longer will you have to spend more time than you need cleaning your carpets, hard floors and upholstery to keep them free from fur, debris and other sheddings.
I’m going to share with you the best pet vacuum cleaners on the market for picking up both dog and cat hair.
Shark Rotator TruePet NV752
It has around 1200 watts of great suction power, which is pretty standard for an upright, however I noticed during testing at my local Walmart store that it outperformed the Dyson Cinetic for picking up sandy gravel over a 3 foot square carpeted area.
The Dyson Cinetic, however, does a better job of managing (filtering) the debris post suction with it’s cyclonic technology.
This awesome suction of larger particles by the NV752 was a big plus for me as my dog brings a lot of this type of dirt and debris into the house after his walks.
Another really great selling point for me is the versatility of this pet vacuum. You can use it in a range of modes that cover every type of vacuuming task that you will encounter around your home. The power cord is 30 feet long and the hose length is 15.4 feet long.
The upright mode with the dynamic swivel steering gives you excellent control when cleaning around furniture over both carpeted and hard floor areas at the touch of a button. The wide power head (10.5 inches) and brush lifts your carpet pile making it look fluffy and new again.
It allows you to get right under chairs, tables, beds and other furniture as well as letting you effortlessly vacuum the stairs and other tighter spaces with the TruePet mini-motorized brush tool.
The Shark Rotator Lift Away TruePet NV752 comes with Anti Allergen Complete Seal Technology including HEPA filtration. This is responsible for trapping 99.9% of allergens and dust particles inside the vacuum cleaner and only releasing clean air back out.
I’m not allergic to animals or I wouldn’t have a dog, however I know some people will find the HEPA filtration beneficial. One important point to remember is keep your filters clean or you may experience lose of suction.
Shark recommends you wash out your filters every 3 months or so to keep your machine performing efficiently. I recommend doing this more often.
Once a week I take the mesh filter and the foam filter outside and give them a good beating to remove all the fine dust particles. I then wash them once per month if I’ve being vacuuming heavily.
Using The TruePet NV752 On Dog Hair
Most vacuum cleaners can’t handle pet hair very well. This is usually because it gets tangled in the brush bar roller. The secret to sucking up any sort of dog, cat or human hair, both long and short, is to turn off the spinning brush.
The Shark TruePet NV752 has a LED light on the front to help you see all the dust, dirt and debris really clearly. Use the fingertip controls on the handle to turn off the brush. Now you can effortlessly stuck up hair from any surface without loss of suction or clogging and tangling.
For cleaning other places such as stairs, cat trees, dog beds or upholstery use the mini motorized brush tool. This agitates the area you are vacuuming and lets you get embedded dust and smaller particles removed with it’s awesome suction power.
The TruePet NV752 really is the best shark vacuum for pet hair when it comes to suction power.
Why I Think It’s The Best Pet Vacuum 2017
The Shark TruePet NV752 does exactly what I need it for at a reasonable price that no other manufacturer can compete with. (Check the current best price and read more reviews here).
It does a great job at removing dust and dirt from my carpets, hard floors, rugs and stairs with it’s assortment of tools and accessories.
It does a really awesome job at removing pet hair that’s embedded into my carpet and over my hard floors which is the main reason why I bought it in the first place.
You could buy a Dyson Cinetic, but they are twice the price and the suction benefits are marginal. You also loose some of the functionality that makes the NV752 better overall.
If you want, you can pay 3 times the price for a Miele. These are superb vacuums cleaners and a great choice for a bagged, canister, pet vacuum, but are you really going to get 3 times the value. No way, but you will get an amazing machine that is built to last!
You can pay a ridiculous amount of money for a Kirby, Rainbow, Riccar or Simplicity and the Shark NV752 will still be more versatile. I also own a Kirby and they are brilliant over carpet, but that’s about it. They can’t tackle long hair as well as the Shark can!
Best Canister Vacuum For Pet Hair
If you’re looking for the best canister vacuum cleaner for pet hair, then the Miele C3 Cat & Dog is my #1 choice.
This machine is only for people who only want the best, whatever the cost!
In fact, this would have been my overall best vacuum cleaner for pet hair 2017 if it wasn’t for the price tag.
The list price for this Miele is $999, however you are getting a high quality, long lasting, sucking machine for your money.
This canister will beat other manufacturers such as Dyson, Shark & Electrolux hands down for performance and reliability.
What’s So Special About This Miele Canister?
I’m sure after reading about how good the Miele Cat & Dog canister vac, you’re wondering why is it so much better than the rest. What exactly are you getting for the extra $$$$.
In a nutshell the Miele C3 is quieter, more reliable, easier to use, healthier and more powerful over all surfaces.
The C3 Cat & Dog contains an active AirClean filter which works similar to a HEPA filter for stopping allergens escaping back into the air, but also stops foul smells and unpleasant odors being released as well. This is an awesome benefit for pet owners – no more smelly vacuuming!
You can literally vacuum any surface with this cleaner as it comes with three different cleaning heads for maximum performance on long, medium or short pile carpet, hard flooring and upholstery.
The Parquet Twister Floorhead SBB 300-3 is designed for extremely quick and gentle cleaning of sensitive hard floors with it’s soft natural bristles that glide smoothly across the surface of the floor.
The Handheld Mini Turbo Brush STB 101 is perfect for easy removal of pet hair, dander, fur and lint from your upholstery, stairs, curtains or hard to reach carpeted areas.
The Electro Plus Floorhead SEB 228 allows you to deep clean any length of carpet pile whether it’s short, medium or long. You can use for cleaning rugs and shag piles also.

Dyson DC65 Animal Complete Upright Vacuum Cleaner
The DC65 Animal Complete is made by Dyson, which if you’ve never heard of them, is considered by many to be the Mercedes-Benz of vacuum cleaners.
Priced around $500 on Amazon.com, this is the best upright vacuum for pet hair and is also the most expensive of the 3, but you only get what you pay for. It’s pretty robust and heavy duty.
Is This The Vacuum They Would Use On Star Trek?
Packed with features, this vacuum cleaner in so innovative, it looks like it’s from the future.
Unlike most upright HEPA vacuums that come with bulky bases that are a hassle to get around tights corners, the Dyson DC65 Animal Complete has an innovative “Ball” as the base.
This allows the cleaner to take tight turns without a problem.
Dyson claims that this model of upright vacuum cleaner has a more powerful suction than any other vacuum. 25% more power in tests to be exact.
Although that claim may be questionable, the videos of this machine sucking up pet hair and grime clearly demonstrate its power.
More suction also means it can be used to quickly eliminate dust and dirt from your home.
Deep Cleaning Bristles
The Dyson Animal Complete also unleashes a redesigned brush bar.
This simply means that the product’s bristles have been optimized to do an even better job penetrating carpet fibers.
This makes the product move deeply into your carpets to easily remove pesky pet hairs and other contaminants.
For those of you with hard wood floors, laminate or tile, the Animal Complete will give just about any other vacuum cleaner a run for its money.
Tangle-Free Turbine Tool
The DC65 Animal Complete comes with a Tangle-free Turbine tool which allows handheld use and does not get tangled with long hair. Counter-rotating heads with brushes pickup and remove dirt, sand and hair from upholstery or car.
For even more protection against pet hairs, I recommend the Dyson Groom Tool attachment which is great for dogs with long or medium hair.
It attaches to the vacuum and removes loose, excessive and extreme embedded dog hair before it’s shed around your home. It also captures harmful allergens during grooming and removes dead skin cells improving the dog’s coat.
Summary Of The Dyson DC65 Animal
You get what you pay for. It’s not cheap rubbish!
This is a terrific vacuum that’s designed explicitly with pet owners in mind.
Like other Dyson uprights, there are never any disposable bags or filters that you have to constantly clean and replace.
Over time, the savings from not having to buy filters and bags will more than likely catch up with the extra up-front cost of investing $500+ in the DC65 Animal Complete making it a pretty attractive value in the long run.
What’s So Good About This Upright Vacuum For Pet Hairs?
● Works great on carpet and hardwood alike.
● No bags or filters to replace. (Pet allergy/asthma friendly and easy clean HEPA filters)
● It comes with an automatic brush adjustment that makes it easier to use
● Dyson created this vacuum specifically with multiple pet owners in mind so it’s up to the job of getting rid of stubborn pet hairs, fur and dander which cause allergies.
A Minor Disadvantage Of The Dyson
● Spending $500+ for a vacuum cleaner is out of the question for a lot of people, but it is worth the price.
Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind Bagless Upright Vacuum (UH70210)
My dog is both lovable and cute but he also sheds – a lot.
Buddy’s fur is light and wispy and many of the top pet vacuum cleaners I’ve tried don’t have the suction necessary to carry it away quickly.
Usually I find myself having to repeatedly run the machine over the same spot in order to pick it up.
Another contender for “best vacuum to get rid of pet hair” is the Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet Rewind Bagless Upright Vacuum (whew, try saying that 3x over).
I actually owned this vacuum for a few years until it finally quit on me a few weeks back prompting me to find a replacement (and inspiring me to write this review).
The Upsides To This Upright Cleaner
The Hoover T-Series was easy to store since the handle folds down, and unlike many others I’ve had of this type, it didn’t lose the “snap”, and eventually fold even while I’m trying to use it.
Like the best Dyson’s, this upright was made specifically for pet owners and even came with a tool made for my pet’s shedding problem.
One of the onboard tools is a pet hair turbo brush that’s actually a 12-inch extension wand.
Not only did this work on getting the hair off the surface of furniture and upholstery, I could really dive down under cushions or down into crevices to get the fur there as well.
Although this is a bagless model, it came with HEPA compliant filters which need to be changed out every few months depending on how often you use it.
Price is another plus for this model. Coming in around $160, this mid priced vacuum was very affordable.
Downside Of The Hoover WindTunnel For Pet Hair
The only downside for me is the height of this vacuum even with the handle down for storage.
It’s lightweight enough that while using it I’m not even aware of how bulky this vacuum cleaner is, but overall, it’s pretty large measuring 16 x 12 x 32.5 inches and weighing 23 pounds.
The only place my family has for it is hidden in a closet near our attic, which is less than ideal.
Other than that, I loved the suction it had, and the brush roll shut off petal made it easy for me to move between carpeted areas to hard floors.
Shark Navigator Lift Away Professional Upright (NV356E)
Finally, there’s the Shark Navigator, another upright vacuum cleaner model. Do you know the difference between the Navigator Vs Rotator?
Solving Several Doggy Dander Related Problems
Labs love to find small spaces behind the couch or under the stairs.
The Shark Navigator looked agile enough to be able to glide between the couch and the wall with it’s featured swivel steering.
It also looked lightweight enough that moving under the stairs didn’t send me to the ER with back pain.
That alone was a great selling point for my family.
Another selling point was its ability to perform on carpet and the wooden floor of our kitchen.
While other vacuums have promised the ability to work on both surfaces, either the great suction didn’t hold out, or the attachments were not appropriate.
The Shark Navigator does have a Dust-Away Bare Floor Attachment with two microfiber pads.
Videos on YouTube made them look easy to attach and they seemed to work with no suction problem.
There’s also a pet hair turbo brush that comes with it designed specifically to pick up your pet’s hair and dander.
Coming in at roughly $450, this model also offers a good value for the money and is probably one of the highest discounted and most inexpensive machines and on Amazon.com with a massive 61% saving on the $450 price tag.
Is The Room For Improvement On This Shark?
The hose that attaches to the wand could be a little bit longer.
For many people it might not be a problem, but at my height, I’d have to climb onto the couch at the midway point in order to reach the floor behind it.
I also wish there was a place on the Shark Navigator Lift Away Pro to store the pet brush when it’s not being used.
Other than these two points, this model is another solid solution if you’re trying to get rid of pesky pet hair. In fact it is one of our best overall upright pet vacuum cleaners for 2016. It would probably be better if it was a robot or cordless.
And The Winner Of My Best Vacuum Cleaner For Pet Hair Is….
After much deliberation and hours of reading consumer reports, I ended up spending the extra money and going with the Dyson DC65 Animal Complete. That was a few months ago and I haven’t regretted it once since then.
I’ll never go back to living in an apartment or house covered in finely shed short dog hairs.
